Occurrence is on a WSW-facing slope rising to the east from a stream cut below. Surrounding area is toally forested national forest land. Upslope to the east is the hilltop and then more hills.;The vegetation is fairly homogeneous with a quite dense understory/ high shrub section. There are taller virginia pines spaced relatively far apart along the slope. There is fairly well-developed soil in some spots.
Representativeness
The plot contains a fairly rare gap in the canopy but was chosen for the presence of shale barren endemics (Trifolium virginicum) or near-endemics and the small extent of unvegetated shaly substrate. There are also more subcanopy than in the surrounding
